Cooking Classes

The Culinary Series Classes

At The Bistro, we are passionate about food and we want to share this with you! We will take you on a culinary world tour and share with you the passion and joy that food can bring to our lives. The class is set up into an eight class series and will be held weekly from 2-5pm on Sundays. The cost is $100 per person for each class. In this series there are 8 classes and it's best if you sign up for them all. Only persons who sign up for all 8 classes will be allowed to participate in the culinary competition. You will receive hands on culinary training, recipes to take home of the foods we prepare, food and drinks during the class, a signed copy of my cookbook, and of course, all proceeds of the class continue to support our mission of providing healthy foods from our nonprofit to the local food banks, church pantries and assisted living facilities in our community.

Curriculum

The classes will begin with an intro to cooking. We will take a glimpse into culinary techniques, ingredients, food safety and nutrition, and the science of cooking. From there you will experience world cuisines, soups and sauces, baking and pastries, fabrication methods, meat, fish and poultry, 30 minute meals and so much more.

The Contest

The last class of the series will be a contest. Each class participant will create an appetizer, entree or dessert with the skills they have learned during the classes and the winner will have their dish featured on our menu at The Bistro.

Class Schedule

A Culinary Journey - 8 Class Series

July 16th - Class 1 - Intro to Cooking

This class is designed to provide an overview of common cooking techniques and ingredients, as well as nutritional best practices. We will cover topics such as basic knife skills, understanding flavors and seasoning, food safety and sanitation, and nutrition.

July 30th - Class 2 - Sauces, Soups and Stocks

This class will teach you the foundations of making a great stock, soup, and sauce. For instance, a wonderful stock can be used to make a soup or even reduced to make a demi-glace, which in turn, creates a wonderful sauce base. A stock can also be clarified to make a beautiful consommé. A sauce does not necessarily need to be liquid either, it is any substance that can be spooned or poured, such as chutney, relish or confiture.

August 6th - Class 3 - The Art of Proteins

In this class we are going to break down six categories in which you can gain some basic knowledge for proper cooking methods, food safety tips, and overall cooking techniques of proteins, to take with you both into the kitchen and out to the grill.

August 13th - Class 4 - Pasta and Grains

In this class we will learn the ins and outs of cooking pasta and grains. We will learn ways to add flavor to simple things like white rice and to speed up the process of making risotto. Discover which pastas are best for certain sauces and how to properly cook them to the perfect al dente stage.

October 1st - Class 5 - Desserts

In this class we will discover my favorite passion….desserts! We will dive into the idea that whether savory or sweet, desserts come in many forms, having many types of cooking techniques involved and many different layers of skill sets. I’ll show you how to make the most challenging things easy.

October 8th - Class 6 - Simple Yet Elegant - What to Make for Dinner

This class will help you to put together simple yet extraordinary meals. We will show you how to pair a protein with the perfect side dish. Show you how a simple sauce can elevate your meal. And we will even look at the health and nutrition aspects.

October 15th - Class 7 - Tips, Tricks and More

In this class I am going to give away many of the tips, tricks and trade secrets of the culinary world. Ever wonder why a restaurant can produce such incredible meals in such a short period of time. Or how they're always able to produce the perfect consistency with their hollandaise sauce. And why their flavor profiles work so well.

October 22nd - Class 8 - Cooking Contest!!!

This is where the student becomes the master. Students will create either an appetizer, entree, soup or dessert during the class. This must be an original recipe you have created on your own or one you have put your own spin on.
